Food distributors in Baltimore

This is the thing that makes Baltimore different to buy in, and it is the reason these pages spend more words on ownership than any others on the site. Several of the metro's best known houses have been acquired inside the last decade and every one of them still trades under its original name, with its original website and its original phone number.

In one case the parent company publishes the subsidiary's street address among its own locations, which is about as clear as documentary evidence gets. In another, four separate names that operators quote against each other turned out to be one business at one address. In a third, two of the largest suppliers in a single trade share a building and an owner. Nothing on a delivery note would tell you. The acquisitions are all recorded in press releases and trade reports, which is why we can state them at all, and each one is cited on the category page where it belongs.

The practical consequence is narrow but sharp. The standard advice to keep a second supplier so that price stays honest assumes the second supplier is a different company. In this metro that assumption needs checking before you rely on it, and checking it takes one search.

Our Baltimore listings sit across 40 distinct areas, and they are not all in Baltimore. The trade runs out through Baltimore County to the north and west, Howard and Anne Arundel counties to the south along the Washington corridor, as far as Carroll County, and in one case across the Bay Bridge. The city keeps a dense industrial cluster south of downtown and the rest is scattered across four counties.

Two of the five trades barely sit in the metro's towns at all. Both the seafood and the produce wholesalers are concentrated in state-owned market buildings at Jessup, in Howard County, which is why so many of these addresses share a street. No other city in this directory has its supply base arranged by a state authority, and it is the single most useful thing to know before trying to buy here.

So the boundary we use is the metro rather than the city line, and it is drawn tightly at the other edge. Washington DC is around forty miles down the parkway and a great many suppliers sell into both, which makes "serving the Baltimore-Washington area" a statement about ambition rather than location. Every company listed here has a facility address in this metro that we read from its own site. Companies that market into Baltimore from Hyattsville or from Pennsylvania were left out and named.

For a buyer the useful question is about routes rather than miles. 66 of the 80 publish delivery, and a supplier in Elkridge and a supplier in Rosedale may both say they cover the metro while meaning opposite ends of it. Ask where the trucks already go, and on which days.

7 of the 80 Baltimore suppliers publish no phone number on their own site, and where a company does not publish a street address we leave the field empty rather than filling it from a third-party listing. Those blanks are the honest state of the research, and they are more useful than a confident guess.

Companies were also excluded on purpose, and each category page names them with the reason. Between them they cover the whole range of ways a supplier can look listable and not be: a parked domain, a website that is still an unedited template, a company trading under a name that belongs to a much larger group, and one whose telephone area code turned out to belong to a different state altogether.
