Three trades wearing one label, and one of them is nearly empty

Search beverage distributors in most cities and you expect a company that turns up with syrup boxes, swaps your CO2 and services the gun. In Chicago, the independent trade that actually exists under that label is coffee.

Fourteen of the twenty companies below are wholesale coffee roasters, and they are not just selling beans. Metric supplies cold brew in cans, kegs and concentrate. Passion House offers partners seven core classes at no charge. Gaslight and Reprise both consult on opening a cafe. Halfwit matches equipment to your brewing process rather than shipping a standard package. Two more are tea houses, and one, Third Wave, is a genuine distributor that buys from roasting partners and installs the equipment.

The fountain and dispensed side is one company. Swanel Beverage has been making fountain syrup since 1941, is one of the oldest independent syrup manufacturers in the country, and it is in Hammond, Indiana. That is not a research failure. The national bottlers own the fountain and packaged side of this market so completely that there is very little independent trade left to list, and pretending otherwise would be the dishonest version of this page.

The most famous name here is four owners deep

Intelligentsia was founded in Chicago in 1995 and did as much as anyone to define third-wave coffee. It is also the clearest example on this site of what happens to a successful independent. Peet's acquired a majority stake in 2015. Peet's belongs to JDE Peet's, which belongs to JAB. And on 1 April 2026 Keurig Dr Pepper announced it had acquired 96.22 percent of the shares in JDE Peet's, alongside plans for a future Global Coffee Co. That split is announced rather than completed, so treat it as pending, the way we treat the Sysco and Restaurant Depot deal on our homepage.

None of that makes Intelligentsia a bad supplier. It makes it a differently owned one, and the contrast on this page is unusually sharp because another roaster states the opposite position in one sentence. Sparrow Coffee's own site says: we do not sell our coffee through chain stores or distributors. Customers deal with the roastery directly, on everything including equipment.

That is the actual choice in Chicago coffee. A roaster backed by a global group with the supply chain and consistency that brings, or a roastery of a dozen people that will build you a one-off roast and answer the phone itself. Both are legitimate. Knowing which you are calling is the point of this page.

You are buying a programme, not a price per pound

This is the part that surprises operators coming from produce or protein. A wholesale coffee account here is rarely a line item. Passion House gives partners seven core classes at no charge, from an introduction to coffee through to extraction theory. Intelligentsia runs a Coffee Service Training Program with its own labs. Big Shoulders runs six of its own cafes, so the wholesale team has worked the same equipment and shifts as its accounts. Reprise and Third Wave both install and maintain the machines.

Prices are almost never published, with one exception worth noting: Mojo posts contract roasting at 1.75 dollars per pound. Everyone else quotes per account, which means the comparison you are actually making is between service packages, not between bean prices.

Tea is smaller and more concentrated. Rare Tea Cellar in Ravenswood runs a wholesale line for restaurants and hotels covering barrel aged, pu-erh and oolong teas plus a mixology range of botanicals, syrups and shrubs, and its own press page carries the headline about stocking Chicago's Michelin-starred kitchens. Volition designs the tea programme, including staff training and brew flow, rather than shipping tins. If you want a second name in Chicago tea, the list is genuinely short, and the comments below are people looking for exactly that.

Ask what the training is worth

Several roasters here bundle barista training and equipment support. Priced separately that is real money, and it is the main thing separating otherwise similar accounts.

Ask who installs and services the machine

Reprise, Third Wave, Metric and Sparrow all say they handle equipment. A roaster who only ships beans leaves that to you.

Ask about roast date, not delivery date

Third Wave delivers within a few days of roasting. That is the number that matters for coffee, and it is not the same as the delivery window.

For fountain, the independent option is one company

Swanel in Hammond, making syrup since 1941. Otherwise you are talking to the national bottlers, and that is worth knowing before you start.

What is not on this page, and why

Beer and liquor wholesalers are excluded deliberately. Chicago has a large alcohol distribution trade, and some of those companies do carry non-alcoholic lines, but they operate inside the three-tier licensing regime, which means an operator cannot simply open a non-alcoholic account with one the way they would with a coffee roaster. Putting them on a restaurant-supply page would imply an option that is not really available. The reasoning, in both directions, is recorded in our research notes.

The other absence is the big one: the national bottlers. Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Keurig Dr Pepper are not independent distributors and are not what this directory lists, but they are who most Chicago operators actually buy fountain and packaged drinks from. This page is the independent alternative to them, and for fountain specifically that alternative is thin.

One more thing we could not resolve and will not guess about: two roasters on this page, Big Shoulders and Halfwit, publish the same street address in Pilsen, and neither mentions the other. There is presumably a shared roasting facility or a history behind it. We could not verify what, so both listings carry the address and neither carries an explanation.

  • Alcohol wholesalers. Excluded. A different licensing regime, and you cannot open a non-alcoholic-only account with one.
  • The national bottlers. Not listed, because they are not independent distributors. They are still who most operators buy fountain from.
  • Two roasters, one address. Big Shoulders and Halfwit share a Pilsen street address and neither explains it. We report it and leave it there.

Reprise Coffee Roasters in Avondale and Evanston. If your friend is really into espresso and pour over, this is THE shop in Chicago to order from. They do almost exclusively single origin coffees from Central America and Africa. Some nanolots and microlots they'll make unique processing so you can choose between natural, washed, and between fermentation styles. In addition, they compete their coffees in tasting competitions and regularly place, so you can find some highly regarded coffees made with arietals like Pink Bourbon or Gesha coffee beans. Sparrow, Intelligentsia are great but slightly more corporate due to the partnerships they have. Dark Matter and Hexe are good if they like dark roasts, but I don't think their coffees hold up to Reprise or Intelligentsia for pour over. If your looking for a good one without blowing the budget, my wife and I drink Metropolis coffees for our daily brew. Lots to choose from overall - youd be hard pressed to pick one that isn't good!

Everyone keeps mentioning the local chains which are solid but by far the best coffee is at Gaslight in Wicker Park. Roast their own beans in house and the beans are so good everyone I know who lives out of town that Ive taken there has started ordering their stuff online

So far, Avondale and metric. I typically brew pour overs when I buy their beans. Each both had one with strawberry jam or some kind of jam listed on the descriptors and they brewed really well. 4LW I'm still working thru finding the one I like. I've also been ordering online too from a craft specialty roaster in Indiana. I have a few bags resting so haven't tried just yet. They're called SW Roasters and they came highly recommended from the pourover community/subreddit! Do you have any specific beans you like from magnifico?

Beverage distributors in Chicago: common questions

Who supplies fountain drinks and soda syrup to Chicago restaurants?

Mostly the national bottlers: Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Keurig Dr Pepper, none of which is an independent distributor. The one independent we could verify is Swanel Beverage, which has made fountain syrup since 1941, is one of the oldest independent syrup manufacturers in the country, and works from Hammond, Indiana serving the Chicago region. It makes bag-in-box syrup and installs and services the dispensing equipment, ice machines and CO2 behind it.

Why is this page mostly coffee roasters?

Because that is what the independent beverage trade in Chicago actually is. Fourteen of the twenty companies here are wholesale coffee roasters, two are tea houses, one is a distributor that does not roast, and one is a fountain supplier. The bottlers own the fountain and packaged side so completely that there is very little independent trade left to list. We would rather show you the shape of the market than pad the page.

Are beer and liquor distributors included?

No, deliberately. Chicago has a large alcohol distribution trade and some of those companies carry non-alcoholic lines too, but they operate inside the three-tier licensing regime, so an operator cannot open a non-alcoholic-only account with one the way they can with a coffee roaster. Listing them here would imply an option that is not really on the table.

What does a wholesale coffee account in Chicago actually include?

More than beans, usually. Passion House offers partners seven core classes at no charge. Intelligentsia runs a Coffee Service Training Program with its own labs. Big Shoulders runs six of its own cafes, so its wholesale team has worked the same equipment as its accounts. Reprise, Third Wave, Metric and Sparrow all handle equipment. Prices are almost never published, so the real comparison is between service packages rather than price per pound.

Who owns Intelligentsia Coffee?

It is several owners removed from the Chicago independent it was in 1995. Peet's acquired a majority stake in 2015, Peet's sits under JDE Peet's, and on 1 April 2026 Keurig Dr Pepper announced it had acquired 96.22 percent of the shares in JDE Peet's along with plans for a future Global Coffee Co. That restructuring is announced rather than complete, so we treat it as pending. Sparrow Coffee is the sharpest contrast on this page: its own site says it does not sell through chain stores or distributors at all.

Who supplies tea to Chicago restaurants?

The list is short, which is itself worth knowing. Rare Tea Cellar in Ravenswood runs a wholesale line for restaurants and hotels covering barrel aged, pu-erh and oolong teas plus cocktail botanicals, flavour pearls, syrups and shrubs. Volition Tea designs a tea programme including staff training and brew flow rather than just shipping tins. Reprise and The Coffee & Tea Exchange both carry tea alongside coffee on the same account.

Is this directory paid or independent?

No distributor paid to be listed and there are no affiliate links to any of them. The directory is published by VoiceOrder Solutions, an ordering software company, and that relationship is disclosed in the footer of every page and on our about page. Listings are ordered by supplier type, not by any commercial relationship.

How was this list of Chicago beverage distributors built?

We ran search passes across coffee, tea, fountain and dispensed-beverage supply in Chicago, then captured each candidate company's own website and read the details off it, in September 2026. Alcohol wholesalers were excluded for the licensing reason above, with the reasoning recorded either way. Several companies were excluded because their sites blocked capture or returned dead pages, and those are named in our research notes so nobody cites them later.

A note on what is missing

Two known gaps. Greco and Sons, a large Chicago Italian foodservice distributor now being acquired by Sysco, is not listed because its site blocked our capture and we would not write it up from third-party sources. Stock Yards is a US Foods brand rather than an independent distributor, so it appears under US Foods rather than as its own listing.
