Most of the beer licenses in this metro belong to breweries

Colorado's August 2026 license register carries 255 wholesale beer licenses statewide and 119 at premises in the six metro Denver counties. That number looks like a large trade until you read the names against the rest of the register: 80 of the 119 are held by a business whose name also holds a brewery or brewpub license.

That leaves 39 metro wholesale beer licenses not attached to a licensed brewer under the same name, and that 39 includes importers, food companies with a beer line, a cash and carry chain and several branch permits. The number of companies a Denver bar can actually open a beer account with is smaller again, and this page is the nine of them whose own published copy names beer.

This is worth understanding before you read any count of Colorado beer distributors anywhere. A license register in a brewing city measures breweries with a self-distribution right, not the size of the wholesale trade. It is the reason we built this page from what companies publish about themselves and then checked the register, rather than the other way round.

The count column is computed from the listings above. The rest describes how each business model typically works, not a term any individual company has published. Minimums and delivery days are always set per account, so treat this as a shortlist tool, not a quote.

Beer is the one product Colorado draws a boundary around

A Colorado beer wholesaler designates, on its own license application, the territory within which it may sell a brewer's designated products, as agreed with that brewer. Delivering malt liquors to a retail licensee outside that designated territory is listed in the statute as an unlawful act. And a state regulation closes the obvious gap: a retailer's purchase collected at the wholesaler's own licensed premises must still be from the wholesaler designated for that territory.

So you cannot drive to a different wholesaler's dock to get around the map. That is unusually explicit, and it is the sharpest version of this rule we have found in any state on this site.

Now read the same title for the license covering wine and spirits and there is nothing equivalent. Every territory provision governs malt liquor. One state, two wholesale licenses, and only one of them assigns you a supplier.

The practical consequence is the one this directory keeps returning to. The standing advice to keep a second supplier for price leverage works on the wine side in Colorado and does not work the same way here. For a given brand in your territory there is one wholesaler, and a second quote is not available. What is available is the rest of the list: the brands, not the price, are where the choice sits.

The top of this page is the same few names that top the wine page, because the largest houses carry everything. The companies that make Denver's beer trade look different from anywhere else are further down.

One more is the only company in this verified set holding a Colorado beer wholesale license and no wine and spirits license at all, which makes it the single supplier here that a wine buyer would never meet. It publishes a mailing box rather than a street address, so the city on its card is the licensed premises from the register.

The largest beer book in the state moved in June 2026

The largest wine and spirits distributor in the country announced the closing of its acquisition of substantially all of the assets of a Colorado beverage distributor's operations, saying the deal gave it the Anheuser-Busch portfolio currently sold in Colorado. Denver newspapers reported the agreement that April, and reported that layoffs would begin on 5 June, the same day the seller expected to shut down its Colorado facilities.

There is a name trap in this story worth flagging, because it caught us. The company that sold its Colorado assets also operates in Georgia, where it is one of the largest beverage houses in that state and is not for sale. A stale Colorado trade association roster still lists it as a Denver member and links to the Georgia company's website. Our own Atlanta liquor page lists that Georgia business, and the two are the same name and different transactions.

What it means for a Denver operator is straightforward and worth asking about directly. When a book that size changes hands, brand assignments move with it, and your rep, your order day and your cutoff may all have changed inside the same year. Ask who holds your brands now rather than assuming.

Where these rows came from, and why this list is nine

Seven of these nine rows are written from the company's own website. Two carry no company copy at all: one sits behind an age-verification interstitial that returns on every page, and the other returns a bot challenge on every URL we tried. Both are in the Colorado Beer Distributors Association's published member roster and both appear in the state license register, so those rows are built from an association list and a government record and say so on the card. They are thin and declared, which is the same treatment fourteen rows on our Baltimore pages get.

One of those two publishes conflicting ZIP codes between the roster and the register, so no ZIP is shown rather than us picking one.

This page carries nine suppliers where most category pages on this site carry fifteen to thirty, and the missing tenth is worth naming. A large regional distributor holds a Colorado wholesale beer license, and its Colorado page and its 887-brand Colorado catalog contain no occurrence of the word beer at all: only its national tagline, which covers four states, mentions it. Holding a license is a fact about permission. This directory lists what a company publishes, so that company is on our Denver wine page and not this one.

Four of the nine also appear on that wine page, at the same addresses, because their own copy names both. That is a genuine overlap rather than a padded list, and the two pages argue different law rather than different companies.

I’ve long held a theory that a major reason for Colorado’s craft culture was the state law that prohibited grocery stores from carrying beer. When forced to drive to an alcohol specialist, one is more likely to encounter and learn about craft beers. With this no longer the case, I’d not be shocked if the craft market here begins to shrink. As non-example of my theory, beer sales in New York are dominated by convenience stores and groceries. Despite the metro being 8-10x larger than Denver’s, there are fewer craft brewers than we see here.

Okay so I'm not crazy. I've never been a huge drinker and I've never been into beer/cider/etc, but even I remember like 15-20 years ago the whole craft beer thing seemed way bigger than today. Felt like there was a new brewery on every corner for a while there. And nowadays even when I go out, I'll have a rum and coke or disaronno, and my beer friends will just get a Coors or whatever and call it good. Is that just casual weed taking over casual drinking, or something else?

Golden: Cannonball Creek, Mountain Toad, New Terrain, Golden City, Bottles and Barrels, and of course Coors are all places I've been and enjoyed. Denver: Comrade, Bierstat, Spangalang, Ratio, Our Mutual Friend, Trve, Cerebral, Cohesion, Westfax, Odd13 and 4 noses are all some of my favorites. Bewnie has Eddyline, but if you go down to Salida there's Soulcraft and Poncha Springs has Elevation. Those are also both excellent breweries.

"As a result, Dry Dock, known for beers like Apricot Blonde and Hopricot IPA, will move all of its production from Denver, where it had been making beer at Great Divide Brewing, to Longmont. The Dry Dock Aurora taproom, at 15120 E. Hampden Ave., will remain open. The move comes just a day after Great Divide Brewing, another of Colorado’s legacy companies, was acquired by the newly formed Lafayette-based parent company of both Denver Beer Co., Funkwerks, Howdy Beer, Cerveceria Colorado and Stem Ciders. Stem had merged with Denver Beer Co. and Funkwerks in February to create Wilding Brands, which now controls more than a dozen taprooms and restaurants across the Front Range. Great Divide founder Brian Dunn told The Denver Post on Tuesday that economies of scale have become much more important for breweries these days."

The raw material costs are just one cost that everyone loves to point at and shout “look how much money is in beer”. I have to service debt on a building, pay for labor, pay for utilities, and pay taxes - all of which have went up in the last 5 years. We are definitely seeing a squeeze on folks not wanting to, or being able to go out for financial reasons, but breweries aren’t charities and you can’t make the math work on $5 pints.
